NYC at Night

It’s funny. I hate the dark. Absolutely hate it. When I’m home alone or on vacation, I always sleep with one lamp and the tv on. Yet, I love going out at night and taking pictures. NYC always looks so much more interesting at night all lit up with the lights from the bridges and stores and signs. I make no secret of the fact that NYC is not my favorite place but I won’t deny that night shots are some of the best shots here. All the pictures in this post were taken with my Canon G7X on auto mode. I never shoot in auto but for a point and shoot I wasn’t going to go to any special pains. This little guy never fails to impress me because the shots came out really good (in my opinion).
This shot of the bridges is my favorite shot of the night. It has so much in it without being overwhelming and a big mess. I took these shots on my way home from work. Normally I'm too tired at the end of the day to do anything except put one foot in front of the other. I'm still walking to and from work. I refuse to pay $2.90 each way to ride those disgusting buses. Sorry not sorry. I went to Costco over the weekend with my mother and I was just looking out the window when the smell of dried urine overpowered the whole bus. Sigh! It's one of the many reasons I refuse to take public transportation unless absolutely necessary.
I love watching boats cruising along the water at night. I imagine the view from one of those boats must be nice. When I was in the UAE I debated about doing some kind of dinner cruise thing, but I honestly just didn't have the energy for it. Also, it would have been awkward because I would have been the only person there by myself. Normally I don't care about things like that but sometimes it makes me feel a little uncomfortable. There's also being surrounded by people thing too. I've never liked having a ton of people around me and the older I get, the more that feeling increases. Now, if I knew a man who had their own boat and wanted to go for a nighttime boat ride, that would be just fine. LOL.
I’m definitely enjoying the cooler days and nights. Whenever we get a warmer day people always love to say “It’s beautiful outside” and I nod and smile even though I don’t agree that warmer days are beautiful. But most people don’t enjoy the cold so they would feel that warmer days are beautiful. To be honest, I nod and smile a lot each day because I disagree with most of what people say but since they’re talking to me I have an obligation to not be a dick by expressing a contrary opinion. It’s honestly exhausting. It’s why my dream is to live in a house in the mountains where I can’t even see my nearest neighbor’s house.
Night photography is probably the only time I get truly excited taking pictures in this city. Everything just looks so beautiful all lit up.
Most of these shots are of the bridges because that’s my main view as I’m walking home. It’s interesting to look across the river and see the Brooklyn side all lit up. I believe that the splash of yellow light at the bottom right of the picture is Jane’s Carousel.
I'm not sure what this place is. I think it's part of Pier 36 but I could be mistaken. They have some of those porch swings but they always have someone in them, so it's hard to find a swing. It's a beautiful, peaceful view and nice for families. I know that around the corner they have a bunch of those tour boats and there are always long lines of people waiting to get on. This area has become a bit of a clusterfuck because there is construction going on everywhere. Even so, it was nice to take pictures again.
Over the weekend I did load up some recipes on my Fujifilm X100V and X-T4. I took the X100V out on my lunch hour and tried out some of the presets. I’m a bit torn on the results, but that will be in the next blog post. I say this all the time but I really have to start posting regularly. The problem is that I’m always so exhausted during the week that on the weekends I stay at home. It’s rare that I venture outside of the sanctuary of my apartment. The other day I realized that I never even went hiking this summer. Not once. That hasn’t happened in years. Maybe ever. And hiking season is over for me. Your girl isn’t down with the winter hikes. I love the cold weather but have a tendency to get turned around and those cold mountain temperatures are no joke.
